If you're here for a shoot that means something, good. That's the only kind I do.

Most sessions are an hour of standing where you're told. This isn't that.

I want to know what the day actually is before I decide how to photograph it, because a picture of people who were genuinely there looks nothing like a picture of people being photographed.

In ten years you'll want one photograph from this year. Everything on the day is in service of that.

I don't run an hour and hand over a folder. I plan the day around what it's for, shoot it properly, and stay until it's right. People tend to leave with more than they came for.

Nine questions, about four minutes. They run in a deliberate order and most of them are optional. Help me see what you're already picturing.

Let us start with what it is for.

The questions run in a deliberate order and most of them are optional. Answer what you know, skip what you do not, and there is a box at the end for everything that did not have a question.

First, what are we marking?

Whatever put this in your head. If several are true at once, pick the one closest to the middle of it and tell me the rest underneath.

Who will be in the frame?

Names, ages, the dog, whoever is traveling in for it. It tells me the size of the day, and it is usually where the first real idea comes from.

Why this year?

This is the one I care most about. Something is different about now, or you would have booked this last spring and already have the pictures. Whatever that thing is, that is the thing I am actually photographing.

When these are finished, where will they live?

A photograph on a wall and a photograph on a phone are two different jobs and I shoot them differently, right down to how I frame. Pick as many as are true.

Have you done this before?

If you have, what you loved about it is the most useful thing you can tell me. If you have not, that is just as good to know and we will take it slowly and I will tell you what happens next at every step.

What do you think one photograph you love is worth?Optional

There is no right answer and I am not pricing you from it. I ask because the answer tells me what to aim at, and because most people have never been asked. Picture the one from the last question, the one that ends up on the wall. A number is fine. So is an answer with no number in it at all.

And what did you have in mind to invest?Optional

A real range helps more than a guess at what you think I want to hear, and every range gets a proper answer. Every session is quoted on its own, so this is what I build a quote around rather than a number you have to match.

When, and whereabouts?

Rough is fine. None of this holds a date, and we will pick the real one together once I know what we are making.

A name and an email is all I need. I answer these myself and I do not add anybody to a list.
